On Monday, the Hornets used their remaining cap space on veteran center Roy Hibbert. According to multiple reports, Hibbert and Charlotte have come to terms on a one-year five million dollar deal.
This should just about wrap things up for the Hornets in terms of free agency. Below you will find analysis on each of the four signings they've made this summer.
2016 Free Agent Acquisitions
Nicolas Batum (5 years, $120M) - A very solid contract for the Hornets. They knew they had to keep Batum, and they did. While they ended up giving him the fifth year (one that only they could offer), they reached an agreement that was significantly below the maximum for the French forward. Grade: B+
Marvin Williams (4 years, $54.5M) - It's great to have Marvin back. Like Batum, Williams also left some money on the table to return to the Hornets. This is a very team friendly deal given the market for stretch fours like Williams. Grade: A
Ramon Sessions (2 years, $12.5M) - A former Bobcat who spent last season backing up John Wall in Washington. As soon as I heard Lin was headed to Brooklyn, I had a feeling Charlotte would pursue Sessions. He plays similarly to Lin, and worked well with Walker during his first stint in Charlotte. Grade: B-
Roy Hibbert (1 year, $5M) - While many may question this move, I'm very excited about it. Hibbert is a two-time all star (2012, 2014), as well as a former member of the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team. Cho and Clifford have a track record of getting the most out of forgotten about players, and I could see the same thing happening here. Besides, even if it doesn't, he'll be off the books a year from now. Grade: B
Overall: Great work by Rich Cho. Not only did he put the team in a position to battle for home court next year, but he should have himself in a place of great flexibility next summer. The Hornets have all of their first round picks, and will have plenty of room when the cap rises again next summer. If things go south, decline Sessions' option, let Hibbert go, and there's nearly 25 million in cap space to play with next summer. Grade: A-
