The news broke today that Gordon Hayward will fly to Charlotte early next week to meet with the Hornets. This is the first significant news to break about the Hornets since July the first. For Hornets’ fans, this is good news, as Hayward could certainly fill a void for Charlotte.
The only problem with this situation is the fact Hayward is a restricted free-agent. This means that the Jazz will have the opportunity to match any offer that Hayward agrees to with another team. Utah’s willingness to match seems very likely at this point, as the Jazz beleive Hayward’s ceiling to be very high.
To lure the Jazz away from matching a possible Hornets’ offer, there’s always the possibility of a sign and trade. Charlotte would simply send pieces to the Jazz in exchange for the Butler product.
Overall, Hayward makes perfect sense for Charlotte because of his size, versatility, and the ability to space the floor. If things go well next week, expect Charlotte to pursue sign and trade possibilities with Utah.
