This morning Hornets coach Steve Clifford spoke with WFNZ's Chris McClain on the Mac Attack. Clifford confirmed our original believe that Courtney Lee will start at the shooting guard position, with Nic Batum sliding back to the small forward spot.
Clifford noted that this move will put more of an "onus" on Batum on a nightly basis. Lee is a good outside shooter and is what Steve Clifford calls a good "team defender." However, the newest Hornet won't be able to guard players like Carmelo Anothony.
The next few months will certainly show us what Nic Batum is made of. There is a lot of talk that a max contract could be in his future. Since he will now have to carry more of the defensive load, this will give Batum the opportunity to showcase his all around skills.
It's worth noting that Clifford was very appreciative of P.J. Hairston's time in Charlotte. He believes that with all the injuries they've had, Hairston is a big reason they currently have 27 wins. Clifford also told McClain that he never saw Hairston as an elite three point shooter.
The Hornets will practice twice over the next two days before boarding the team plane for Milwaukee. The Hornets and Bucks face of at 8:00 PM on Friday night.
