Okay, before you think I’m crazy, let’s straighten some things out. Am I aware that in all likelihood neither of these players will play for the Hornets next year? Yes, in fact I am. While it’s not likely, there's still a small possibility. So for the next five minutes of your time, let’s imagine that both players wanted to be a Hornet next season, but we can only choose one. Below, I will state my case for both players, but ultimately chose a winner at the end.
Carmelo Anthony: There’s a lot of reasons why Anthony would put this team over the top. The number one reason is simple: he’s a scorer, which is something the Hornets are in desperate need of. In my opinion, with him on the outside and Al on the inside, Charlotte would become a top four team in the east. Now before I praise him to much, let’s talk about the obvious questions. If he’s so good, why did New York miss the playoffs last year? To me, it was more about the culture of their team and not about Anthony. So if you put Anthony in a situation like Charlotte, where everyone has their heads on straight, he should shine. Another obvious question is his defense. He might not be the best defender on the planet, but I think coach Clifford could get the best out of him. The bottom line is that Carmelo Anthony would dramatically improve the Hornets, and the front office should at least pick up the phone and inquire about him. Hey, no one thought Jefferson would come here, so why can’t we repeat history?
Kevin Love: If you’re unfamiliar with the situation, Kevin Love is not a free agent. Love has another year left on his current contract with Minnesota, but has told them he would not re-sign after next season. So, as you can imagine, the Timberwolves are shopping him to the highest bidder. If the highest bidder happened to be Charlotte, the combination of Love and Jefferson would be deadly. The two actually played together for a short while in Minnesota. Like Jefferson, Love is a scorer and is not afraid to shoot the three. His sweet stroke would certainly be welcomed by Charlotte fans. Another thing you like about Love is his ability to rebound. This is a guy who has really turned into a complete player over the years. Another part of the equation is what you would have to give up for Love. Frankly, I don’t think the Hornets could match some offers made by other teams, unless they’re willing to give up the 9th and 24th pick, which is probably not a possibility.
Q: If you had to choose between Anthony and Love, which player would you make a Charlotte Hornet?
To me, this is a fairly easy question. While Love is a guy who would bring a ton to our team, I would have to take Anthony. While watching the Bobcats last year, I knew what they were missing, and that was a wing scorer. @HBK_DB on twitter said it best, there are few players you don’t pass on in this league, and Anthony is one of them. He would bring that “it” factor to Charlotte, that star power and household name that our team needs so desperately. This move would also allow Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to become a role player where he might be more equipped to handle. At the end of the day, a scorer at the two or three is what this team is missing the most. While a lot of you might disagree, keep one thing in mind: you can’t go wrong with either of these players.
